Project Prep
As always, we recommend creating a sample version of this project to use as an example. It helps the kids to be able to see what they’re working towards as they are crafting!
Apple Tree Project Instructions
This project will be completed in three easy steps:
Step One:
- Work with students to trace their hands and forearms onto a brown piece of paper.
- Cut along the traced outline. This will create the trunk of the tree along with 5 branches.
- Glue the tree trunk to the white piece of paper.
- Note that younger children will need complete one-on-one assistance with this step, while older kids in later grades may be able to trace their own hands (or work with partners to do so), and cut them out and glue them down independently.
Step Two:
- Using green paint and circular sponge brushes or sponges, stamp leaves around the top of the apple tree (around the fingers of the traced hand).
- Once the students are happy with the leaves on their apple tree, set the trees aside so the green paint can dry.
Step Three:
- Once the leaves are completely dry, hand out red dot markers. The students will place dots throughout the leaves to represent the apples on the tree. Once the apples have been added, the apple trees are done!
- To finish the project, students should sign the front of their artwork at least 1” away from the edge of the paper.
This apple tree craft is easy enough for preschool classes but can be a great option for early elementary as well. It comes out cute every time! The fact that it utilizes a handprint also makes it a great keepsake option, ideal for featuring on Original Works products.
