Dotted Christmas Tree Lesson Plan

Christmas tree made with construction paper and dots painted with q-tips

What You’ll Need

  • Construction paper
  • Washable paint
  • Q-tips
  • Glue

Project Prep

To prepare for this project, you’ll need to do a bit of cutting. You’ll need to cut the “ornaments,” which should be small circles about a half inch or less in diameter. You may choose to cut them out of various colors of construction paper, or stick to just one festive color. You’ll also need to cut out stars for the tops of the trees, as well as trunks (brown rectangles) for the bottom of the trees.

Each child will need:

  • One star for the top of the tree
  • One tree trunk
  • 8-10 ornaments for on the tree

Additionally, you’ll need to draw a triangle on each page in pencil. This will serve as a guide for where the students should ‘stamp’ with their q-tip dipped in paint to create the shape of a Christmas tree.

As usual, we recommend creating a sample of this project beforehand. This gives the kids a general idea of how the project will turn out so they understand the concept as they’re working through the steps.

Q-Tip Dot Christmas Tree Project Instructions

This project will be completed in two easy steps:

Step One:

  • The students will use q-tips dipped in green paint to fill the triangle drawn on the page with dots. The tiny dots should just about fill the triangle, while also leaving some white space so the individual dots are visible.
  • Once the trees have been painted, set them aside to dry.

Step Two:

  1. Once the dotted trees are dry, it’s time to add the construction paper accessories and details! Using glue sticks, have the kids add ornaments throughout their trees. Glue the tree trunk centered at the bottom of the triangle. Finally, add a star to the top of the tree!
  2. To finish the project, students should sign the front of their artwork at least 1” away from the edge of the paper.

This is a fun and easy holiday craft that can be done with students of a variety of ages, ranging from toddlers to elementary schoolers. It’s cute, festive, and makes a great holiday keepsake – especially if you laminate it or feature it on one of our products!
