Tape Resist Name Art Lesson Plan

What You’ll Need

  • White paper provided by Original Works (or another high-quality, 70# 8 ½” x 11” art paper)
  • Bright colored paints or paint sticks
  • Masking tape or painter’s tape
  • Paint brushes

Project Prep

Ahead of time, an adult should write out each child’s name on paper using masking tape or painter’s tape. (Note that scotch tape will not work for this project as you’ll need to use tape that is easy to peel up off the paper after it has been painted.)

Tape Resist Name Project Instructions

This project will be done in two straightforward steps:

Step One:

Prep:

  1. Show your students an example of the finished project so they understand the goal of the project.
  2. Hand out supplies and papers with names pre-taped on them.

Hands-on:

  • Students will paint the entirety of the paper, making sure to paint up to and along the edges of the tape. (You may have to encourage them to do so!)
  • Tips:
    • Don’t oversaturate the papers with paint as this will make it difficult to peel up the tape at the end of the project.
    • For younger students, paint sticks or finger paints work well.
    • If you’re looking to simplify the project, have each child choose one paint color to use.
    • If kids choose to mix colors, encourage the use of primary colors to ensure that the mixed colors create a favorable outcome (rather than a brown mess).
  • For younger students, you may need to work 1:1 to help them paint their project properly and thoroughly.
  • Once the papers are sufficiently covered in paint, put them aside to dry.

Step Two:

  • Once the papers are dry, carefully peel up the tape to reveal the names!
  • Tips:
    • Peel slowly and carefully.
    • Wait until the papers are completely dry.
    • Some older kids may be able to peel the paint themselves, but in most cases it’s ideal for an adult to complete this step of the project.
Note: You can use the finished projects as placemats (laminate them!), cubby nametags, etc. in your classroom. This project can also be altered for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day gifts. Have the kids paint pages with “Mom” or “Dad” taped on. These can make great gifts!
